Mekke devrinin ortalarında, Meryem sûresinden sonra indirilmiştir. Ömer bin Hattâb’ın —Allah ondan razı olsun— bu sûreden etkilenip Müslüman olduğu rivâyet edilir. Adını ilk kelimesinden alan sûre, 135 ayettir.
